  • Cover renewable energy obligations

    Bioethanol that is made from waste reduces CO2-emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels. The lifecycle emissions are reduced by using waste and process residues as a feedstock and therefore 0-emissions can be calculated for the feedstock.

    Furthermore, there is no direct or indirect change in farmland usage. In accordance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC), in terms of biofuel obligations, the contribution made by biofuels produced from waste and residues can be counted double towards the biofuel obligations.

    Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources is inevitable. The demand for biofuels will continue to grow, thus increasing the pressure for imported feedstock and fuel. Biofuels obligations and the taxation of different fuels vary from one country to another. However, the origin and method of production have a great impact on how biofuel is perceived. Bioethanol that is locally produced from waste and process residues evidently has a sustainable life cycle, from production to the end-user.

  • Bioethanol gives the best value for waste

    Waste is more than energy; it is feedstock in bioethanol production through advanced recycling technology. Biodegradable waste can be put into efficient use with the Etanolix® technology to become fuel.

    Etanolix® plants process both unpackaged and packaged products, making waste management easy and hygienic. The side product of the process is animal feed or green energy and soil conditioner when combined with biogas plant.

    Recycling waste and residues into bioethanol increases the value of waste and responds to the growing need of domestic biofuels. Bioethanol production is modern and sustainable waste management. It is clean and easy solution to recycle waste locally.

  • Turn-key plant overview

    We deliver technologically advanced production plants on a turn-key basis for waste-based bioethanol production. These plants can be set up as stand-alone or integrated with production that generates suitable waste for feedstock.

    Currently we offer Etanolix® or Bionolix® alternatives and soon there is also new Cellunolix® plant type available. Our all-round process makes it convenient for a customer to become a producer of advanced biofuel.

How does it work?

  • Etanolix® – Recycle food industry waste into bioethanol

    Energy efficient Etanolix® plants refine waste and residues which are rich in starch and sugar into 99,8% bioethanol that is ready for use in high blend ethanol fuels or as a bio component in low blends. An Etanolix® plant can be set up as stand-alone plant or it can be integrated with production which generates suitable feedstock for bioethanol production. An Etanolix® plant’s production capacity starts from 5 million liters of fuel grade bioethanol produced in a year.

    Suitable feedstock for Etanolix® plant includes fermentable waste and process residues, such as:

    • Bakery waste and process residues, e.g. dough
    • Retail waste, such as surplus bread and sorted biowaste
    • Brewery waste and residues, such as excess yeast
    • Waste and process residues from beverage production
    • Waste and process residues from confectionery production
    • Waste and process residues from potato based products
    • Other waste and process residues that are high in starch and sugar

    The plant is equipped with reception station which enables reception of packaged feedstock, such as surplus packaged bread. The side products of the process can be used as animal feed or feed for biogas production. The side products are renewable energy, heat and electricity, organic soil conditioner and fertilizer.

  • Bionolix® – Recycle municipal and retail biowaste into bioethanol

    The Bionolix® plant makes it possible to produce sustainable biofuel from municipal and commercial biowaste. Pre-handling of packaged biowaste enables more efficient recycling. Thus, the amount of biodegradable waste ending up in landfills can be minimized.

    The Bionolix® plant meets the criteria set by EU legislation for the treatment of out-of-date food. Bionolix® process recycles biowaste into ethanol, a base chemical for various applications. Instead of mere energy recovery, biowaste can be treated as feedstock for bioethanol production. The stillage from the process can be used in biogas production. Biogas can be used for local electricity and district heating or other local energy needs. Furthermore, the side product of biogas production may be utilized as an organic soil conditioner to fertilize land. For example, in Finland we have two side products from the process, which are organic soil conditioner and liquid fertilizer.

    The Bionolix® technology is being tested and operated since 2010 in the Karanoja waste treatment area in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Bionolix is the next commercially available plant type in the portfolio.

  • Cellunolix ® – Contrete step towards commercial cellulosic ethanol production

    St1 Biofuels is a forerunner in technology, enabling the use of sawmill side products like saw dust and chips in ethanol production in the near future. We have developed a technology to utilize saw dust from soft wood, such as pine and spurge. Ethanol production from lignocellulose has technically been available for a long time. Production costs, however, have remained too high to compete on the market. St1 Biofuels has developed a technology that cuts the production costs and enables cost efficient logistics and limited capital risk exposure.

    St1 Biofuels builds first of a kind Cellunolix® plant in Kajaani, Finland. The plant will be in production in year 2016.

  • Bioethanol refinery is an ecological booster to your business

    Extend your recycling possibilities in a profitable way by integrating bioethanol plant with your business location and utilize the benefits from your own waste and residues.

    Dispose of off-spec ethanol in a quick, inexpensive way

    We arrange the pickup of off-spec ethanol batches and transport it to our production plant in Finland for processing. We recycle non-marketable ethanol in a sustainable way according to official regulations to serve as traffic fuel.

    The St1 Off-Spec Ethanol Recovery Service helps industrial and refinery customers throughout Europe. We provide reports for customers and, when necessary, for the authorities. All operations are managed with expertise, and in a documented and confidential way.
